By the end of this module you will be able to understand:

  • Façade fundamentals and what it is that they have to do
  • Façade performance criteria including durability, structure, thermal, acoustics, permeability and fire
  • How to design and specify for maintenance capabilities
  • What typically façades are made of and the properties and limitations of different materials
  • Different procurement methods, forms of contract and how and when to engage a specialist
  • How much façades cost including capital costs, running costs and environmental costs

About this module

Successful façade design is fundamental to a building's architectural expression and performance and depends on a holistic resolution of a wide range of factors. This module will enable specifiers to work through the various factors involved in successful façade design and to hold informed discussions with clients and specialist consultants when additional expertise is required.
